Hot Weekend forecast nursing with no chance of house design!
I used to think this, too. For 8 years I was a CNA and then Nurse Tech, now RN. I have never treated my aides like you’re suggesting. Here are the facts, though: one RN on a 25 resident unit, responsible for 1-2 med passes, wound care, treatments, assessments, all the documentation that comes with a fall or ER trip, drawing labs, Weekend forecast nursing with no chance of house. calling doctors and pharmacies, admission and discharges, angry family members, and everything that needs to be done when a resident passes away – phone calls, charting, legal paperwork, heartbroken family members and friends…the list goes on.
Yes, I would delegate to the 3-4 CNAs on my unit, because there’s 3-4 of them and one of me! You have to answer to somebody, do you think nurses don’t answer to anyone? Do you understand that if a CNA fails to properly do a task a nurse has instructed them to do, and the patient is harmed as a result, that RN’s license is on the line?
Click and be cool!
I have never taken issue with helping with transfers, incontinence care, feeding, ambulation, or any other task, so long as it doesn’t put me behind in what I have to do. Do not throw a blanket statement like “you nurses are liars” when you CLEARLY have never done an RN’s job. We’re all important and vital to patient care. Funny shirts. No need to cannibalize ourselves.
