If Edmund Barton or Lachlan Macquarie or any white historical figure has been born under that tree, we probably wouldn’t be having this discussion. This whole “one thing went wrong and people got mad about THAT but they didn’t get mad about THIS..” is only useful to a point. Same with the “well these people might be bad but THESE people are WORSE!” Everyone should be held accountable for their actions, not because their worse or better than someone else, but just because what they did was wrong. We should be upset about the trees. But don’t blame the people who love and feel the loss for Notre dame and Paris. We are going NASA 2024 shirt It’s not racist to mourn a historic monument of your culture. it is not racist to mourn. But the question remains why an institution who have a job to research and deliver news place so much emphasis on one culturally relevant icon but don’t bother to do the research on another. I’ll tell you why, it’s because one is important to European culture and the other isn’t.
It’s not racist to care about Notre Dame, and I’ve never suggested that. However, it is racist to say that Notre Dame is important because it is over 800 years old and holds an important place in people’s hearts, but the trees are unimportant. In that scenario, European culture is seen as more important and more valuable than Indigenous culture. I’m sure that if as much attention and respect was given to Aboriginal culture in Australia as is to European culture, it would attract many more visitors. Alas, the slaughter that began 230 years ago brings us to our current junction. In my mind, an old tree holds more significance than anything. To me it’s real magic. I was always the weird kid in the trees, talking to the trees or just hanging out by them and as far as I’m concerned, the two are both horrible. But I logically see why one is more popular in media attention than the other.
