I hope that you stay healthy in the future! You’re right. “Most” people in the ER do not behave rudely or become aggressive with staff, but some do. And it happens all the time. And the ER you frequent must do an AMAZING job at protecting you from ever even knowing something is amiss. Because, yes, we get pushy, bossy, know-it-all patients and patients who are drunk or high on God-knows-what who are verbally and sometimes physically abusive, then we put on our professional face, smile, and come into your room and treat you with courtesy and compassion. You’ll never know that we just took care of a SIDS baby or a 16-year-old who was ejected from a pick up truck when it hit the telephone pole. You’ll never know when our hearts hurt because we put on our professional face, smile and listen to your problems.
It is laughable that you think we can just tell our employers to rearrange our schedules. Just try going to a hospital where none of the nurses work nights, weekends or holidays. Emergencies don’t just happen between 8am and 5pm. Further, we are not only responsible for doing just our job, but for making sure everyone else does theirs too. It’s the nurse that gets in trouble when radiology doesn’t do an xray in a timely manner, labs d ont get drawn right away or the doctor doesn’t sign his or her own orders. It’s the nurse that gets in trouble if the charting isn’t complete within an hour or if any one of the ancillary departments misses an order. There are a thousand things wrong with the way emergency care is provided in the US starting with a public that has unreasonable expectations about what emergency departments are for and the way they function inside a larger health care system.
